Ms Dawn Then

Dawn Then, MA, AThR.
Counsellor and Registered Art Psychotherapist
MA Counselling, MA Art Therapy, BA Psychology

Dawn believes that everyone has an innate drive to create – to make sense of his or her experiences in the world. Her role as a counsellor and art psychotherapist is to facilitate this process of engagement, self-discovery and empowerment through the use of an eclectic mix of counselling techniques and art media.

Dawn’s specialization is in Therapeutic Visual Journaling, which encompasses creative narrative image making and writing. This process is a form of self-regulation, stress management and can help survivors of trauma cope with hyperarousal and distress. Utilizing a book/journal in therapy provides a place for recollection, containment of memories, thoughts and emotions. It is a dynamic archive of our lived experience – a place we can organize, revisit, or retell our struggles and triumphs.

In her work, she has found the use of art media in psychotherapy to be deeply beneficial in enabling a safe, holding space for one and all to create, explore and resolve personal conflict or crisis. It is an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the self and find creative solutions to deal with personal challenges. Such challenges may include:

  • Stress
  • Self-Defeating Behaviors
  • Anger
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Developmental or Relational Trauma
  • Life Transition
  • Existential Concerns

Her clinical experience includes working with children in a hospital setting, as well as working with youth and adults in forensic, inpatient mental health, and community settings. She has worked with children and youth who have experienced: trauma, abuse, attachment difficulties, adolescent depression, self-harm, anxiety, and developmental or behavioral issues. She has helped facilitate recovery and promote mental wellness for adults diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar, as well as those recovering from addictions at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

Her work experiences have led her to focus on relational trauma – combining research into this field and providing one-to-one counselling and art therapy services for children, adolescents, and adults.
